Is “Maskne” the new Acne?

COVID seems to be the gift that keeps on giving. After a year of health problems and general chaos, now we have discovered that our mask-wearing is creating another pickle in the skin industry – Maskne. Which as it sounds, means that your skin can develop acne by repeated coverage, lack of breathing and oils/dirt swishing around the surface. Fun times ahead. Luckily, for us, that means another reason to discover new and exciting products and a new beauty category for the skincare industry.

We have scoured the internet for advice from various skin-wizards on what you can do in order to avoid the big oily “M”. Here are our top tips:

  1. Skincare routine: there is no need in using a plethora of skincare products. We recommend choosing a gentle non-soap cleanser and a mild fragrance-free moisturizer to help combat build-up.
  2. Mask material: cotton is the most recommended material to use on your face as it allows your skin to breathe a bit. You need to treat your mask like underwear and wash it frequently.
  3. Make-up break-up: as painful as it is, this is the time to tone down make-up wearing. Use a tinted moisturizer and consider taking off your make-up once you no longer need it (after your work zoom call, for instance). Keep it fresh and simple.
